Everyone has their own daily hygienic routines. But if there is one body part we often neglect, that will be our feet. You may scrub your feet while taking a bath. You may even have a habit of pampering them once a month by having a foot spa and a pedicure. But did you know that you can do more than just by taking basic care of your feet?

Foot care may be essential, but many of us take this for granted. Our feet already get its daily dose of abuse just by walking, running, and wearing the wrong shoes. If you don’t take this seriously, you can run into some foot problems, especially if you have a medical condition such as diabetes. You may even require the expertise of a foot specialist in Singapore if you are not careful. To better care for your feet, you can use the following suggestions:

Check your feet daily

While you are resting or scrubbing your feet, make it a point to check them for any unusual signs. These can include discolouration or changes in the appearance of your toenails, a slightly offensive smell, and even cuts, blisters, or wounds. This step is especially critical for people who are diabetic. If left untreated, this may lead to serious consequences, including ulcers or even amputation.

Keep them dry

Some people sweat a lot. If this is your case, then keep your feet dry as much as possible. You can do this by changing your socks often and washing them right before reusing them. You can use a deodorant to keep your sweating to a minimum. Just make sure that you use a different deodorant for your feet and your armpits.

Think twice before going barefoot

Walking barefoot has its perks. A study claims that walking without any shoes on helps ease pain and reduces stress. But like all good things, walking without your shoes also has its risks. For instance, doing this in public places, especially in locker and shower rooms is a no-no. The floor can be a breeding ground for harmful viruses and bacteria, which means that you can get a fungal infection if you are not careful.

Moisturise your feet the right way

Lotion and cream work best in keeping your feet moisturised. You can also use petroleum jelly if your heels tend to crack. While you’re at it, make sure to massage your tired feet. But it is important to remember not to moisturise in between your toes as this area is prone to infection. By keeping it dry, you can avoid a nasty and embarrassing fungal infection from growing.

Wear the right shoes

Sturdy boots, pointed shoes, high-heeled shoes, and ill-fitting footwear are the worst shoes you can wear. As much as possible, choose shoes that feel comfortable and offer the right support at the same time. The best shoes have a wide heel and enough room for your toes. By wearing proper footwear, you can avoid pain, swelling, and even a more serious foot problem in the future.

Foot care matters more than you might think. By taking great care of your feet, you can get rid of foot pain, avoid putting unnecessary pressure on your soles, and keep your feet nice and pretty in your favourite sandals. So make sure to always give your feet its much needed TLC.
